I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

In the meantime, start wiping up any water, place a container to catch drips, and clear away valuable items from the area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
